Excerpt from publication: by contrast with this exterior approach to announcing sentence, the medical background of philosophy needs to position itself upon tlie point of view of immanent feedback, the rules of that are : formal logical consistency and iiitnllfciual fruitfulni'.iK. each thinker grows right into a yes set of principles, and to those his pondering continues to be certain, and is subjected in its improvement to mental necessity. serious research has to settle how fur it's been attainable for him to deliver tilt; diversified components of his considering into contract with one another. The contradiction is nearly by no means truly found in so direct a sort that a similar factor is expressly maintained and in addition denied, yet regularly in this sort of method that quite a few positions are recommend which, purely by means of advantage in their logical effects, result in direct contradiction and very irreconcilable effects. the invention of those discrepancies is formal feedback ; it often coincides with pragmatic clarification, for this formal feedback has been played in heritage itself via the successors of the thinker in query, and has hence decided for them their difficulties. but this standpoint by myself isn't enough. As merely formal it applies with out exception to all attested perspectives of a thinker, however it provides no criterion for determination at the query, in what the philosophical importance of a doctrine fairly is composed. For it is usually the case that philosophy has performed its paintings simply in conceptions which needs to certainly not be considered as in themselves excellent or loose from contradiction; whereas a large number of person convictions, which there's no party to oppose, needs to stay not noted in a nook, as far as our old survey is anxious. within the background of philosophy nice blunders are weightier t...

MAXIMUS THE CONFESSOR So far there is no reference to the Trinity. 164 We are here in presence, in each of the examples just given, of triadic arrangements; their sources we may identify and so control the extent of Maximus' manipula- tion. The triads are the Origenist-Evagrian: maker provider discerner Sriiiioupyos Trpovor|Tr|s Kpm'is and the Dionysian: being (goodness) wisdom life (power). Of the first the Origenist element is manifest; however a passage of Evagrius is its immediate antecedent.

173 The spirit then is the breath, the breathing out (of the word conceived by the mind) and thus falls naturally into third place in this triad. Maximus in fact enlarges on the master's teaching as to the role of the Spirit. 174 Such functions of spirit are among those related by Verbeke. 176 One could easily indicate the rela- tions of this triad with the single persons of the Trinity; Maximus however finds a statement of the triad sufficient. '177 Clearly some explana- tion is needed, for God is before all immovable.

II. DOCTRINE What then was the Confessor's concept and view of Christianity for which his whole life and death had been but a constant witness ? We can say with perfect truth that it was the same as ours. '109 Yet such an answer would completely evade the question that has but now been asked. What is wanted is to know the concrete con- tour and form which this common doctrine took in the teaching of St. Maximus. Here we must say at once that his whole system is ascetical and mystical;110 yet it is equally necessary to explain the import of these terms as applied to our author.
