The psychologic effects of incontinence have been of interest to researchers in the United Kingdom and the United States. It should be noted that the majority of findings are from studies where the samples are drawn from individuals who sought help for incontinence. The majority of incontinent individuals, however, do not seek help; therefore, the ability to generalize from the findings is limited. Wyman, Harkins, and Fantl (1990) noted that: (a) standardized measurement tools have not been refined; (b) age, gender, and ethnic differences in perceived impact should be investigated; (c) differences in impact between those who seek help and those who do not should be explored; (d) the influence of comorbidity on the psychologic impact of incontinence should be explored; (e) the relationship of perceived impact and different types of incontinence should be investigated; and (f) effect of treatment on the psychologic impact of urinary incontinence should be determined.
